Settled in 1667, Union was the third English speaking settlement in New Jersey after Elizabeth and Newark, with the area that is now Union then called Connecticut Farms.

Union Township was incorporated as a township on November 23, 1808.

Union Township is less than 20 miles west of lower Manhattan with a population of 58,499 located in Union County NJ. Living in Union Township offers residents an urban feel in a suburban community, offering fine dining, NYC transportation, and easy access to Newark International airport. Many young professionals live in Union Township.

Union township is the home of Kean University, a public university that serves its students in the liberal arts, sciences, and the professions. It is best known for its programs in the humanities and social sciences and in education, graduating the most teachers in the state of NJ annually.
